Statement from the Minister of National Defence on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge

April 9th is Vimy Ridge Day, when we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge and those who fought for our country during the First World War.

This battle is seen as a pivotal moment for Canada and for our military. It was the first time that all four Divisions of the Canadian Corps fought side-by-side. They secured a significant victory in extremely difficult conditions. But, victory came at a great cost, with almost four thousand dead and another seven thousand wounded. These brave individuals risked all and made tremendous sacrifices in the hopes of ensuring a brighter future for all Canadians.

Ceremonies commemorating the battle across Canada and in France showcase our commitment as Canadians to never forget our fallen. As we commemorate the 100th anniversary, we honour the sacrifices of our soldiers, and are reminded that our forces continue to carry on their legacy of dedication at home and abroad.
