Happy Ukrainian Independence Day! Over a quarter century ago Ukrainians declared their independence from the Soviet Union. Today, we celebrate the history, people, and traditions of our friends, the Ukrainian people.

Canada was the first western country to recognize Ukraine’s sovereignty. This proud moment is part of a long history of friendship between our two nations. The strong bilateral partnership we share is rooted in the almost 1.3 million ethnic Ukrainians living in Canada today -- the third-largest Ukrainian diaspora in the world.

The Government of Canada is committed to Ukraine and the people of Ukraine as they work toward a stable, democratic and prosperous country. Through the recently-renewed Operation UNIFIER, the Canadian Armed Forces have delivered more than 100 courses to thousands of Ukrainian soldiers.

The recent signing of the Canada-Ukraine Defence Cooperation Arrangement further opens the door for increased cooperation on defence-related issues between our two countries.

We remain committed to continue building long-term, strong ties with Ukraine, and we join Ukrainians around the world today in celebrating Ukrainian Independence Day.

Slava Ukraini!
