The 75th Anniversary of the Dieppe Raid

Video / August 18, 2017

August 19, 1942. Our nation’s bloodiest day in the Second World War. Five thousand Canadians stormed the beaches of Dieppe. Before the sun has set, almost 1,000 of them have given their lives. Another 2,500 have been wounded.

Canadian forces fought bravely against all odds.

The Dieppe Raid brought heavy losses to Canada, but it influenced battle preparations going forward, including victory on D-Day.

On this day 75 years ago, and throughout the Second World War, Canadians fought to defend our values of freedom and democracy, and to bring us the peace and prosperity we enjoy today.

We will remember them always, their sacrifices, and those of their family and loved ones.

Lest we forget.
